The moment Ginger saw Basil’s face, she knew something was wrong. She pushed herself out of her office chair as Basil took a long stride towards her.

“Please sit down,” he said.

Ginger slowly lowered herself. “What’s wrong, Basil?” She made a mental list of her loved ones: Rosa was with the nanny in the nursery, and Scout was reading in the library. The household staff was all accounted for. She’d just returned from Felicia’s house, having stopped in for tea.

Basil sat before her.

“It’s Marvin,” she said.

With a sober nod, Basil confirmed her fears. “He’s alive, love. I’m not sure how it’s possible, but—”

“What happened?”

“He was shot in the head. It appears he’d only been back in his flat for a short time.”

Ginger blinked. “Shot in the head?” She’d seen many soldiers with gunshot wounds in the war, but rarely did they live with a bullet to the head.

“It was a clean shot. The doctor said it missed the mass of his brain.” Basil rubbed the back of his neck. “I’m afraid he’s not out of the woods yet.”

“Oh mercy.” Ginger’s hand went to her chest as she inhaled. “Do you know who’s responsible?”

“The landlady heard Marvin fall to the floor but didn’t hear a gun blast.”

“The gunman must’ve used a suppressor,” Ginger said, “which means—”

“A professional job.”

Ginger felt light-headed at the implications. “Mortimer Sharp?”

“Likely a henchman,” Basil replied. “He’s not the type of fellow to get his hands dirty if he can help it.”

“Any witnesses?” Ginger asked.

“Not so far, but the officers are canvassing.”

Ginger placed a hand on her forehead. “We have to tell Scout.”

“I’ll do that,” Basil said. “In the meantime, we must alert the family.”

Ginger’s chin shot up. “What do you mean? Surely this has to do with the boxing club and bad bets?”

It was Basil’s turn to rub his face in his hands. “We don’t have a clear motive or proof of the gunman’s identity. Perhaps the fact that Marvin is related to our son is merely a coincidence. But—”

“Perhaps not,” Ginger finished weakly. “We need to tell everyone before they read it in the newspapers or hear it reported on the wireless.”

“Indeed,” Basil said. “Where might I find Scout?”

“He’s in the library.”

After Basil had left in search of Scout, Ginger sent Lizzie across the court to give a message to Burton to pass on to Felicia and Charles, inviting them for tea and receiving important information. An idea brewed in Ginger’s mind, and she’d need Charles’ help to pull it off. But first, she’d have to do some major convincing.

Ginger told Pippins to show the Davenport-Witts to the drawing room when they arrived and to have one of the maids bring tea. She then escorted Ambrosia down the hall.

“Where’s the fire?” Ambrosia sputtered as Ginger guided her by the arm. The tapping of Ambrosia’s walking stick clicked rapidly on the marble tiles.”

“No fire,” Ginger said, slowing down. “I’ve got family news that I want to tell everyone when Felicia and Charles arrive, that’s all.”

“Family news?” Ambrosia said.
